The islands of Abaco

This island-hoppers’ paradise is considered by many to be the boating and sailing capital of the region. The islands of Abaco are the northernmost group in the Bahamas – about 165 miles east of Palm Beach, Florida. The names of many of the anchorages and ports of call tell you much about these waters: Lubbers Quarters Cay, Green Turtle Cay, Castaway Cay, Man-o-War Cay and Umbrella Cay. Walker's Cay is of particular interest: it is fringed by a barrier reef comprising stunning coral formations that are home to an amazing array of colourful fish. Divers and snorkelers will see everything from dazzling tropical fish, turtles and schools of the majestic silver pompano and the considerably larger amberjack through to sharks, barracudas and eagle rays. Marsh Harbour is the largest and most commercial settlement on the main island, Great Abaco, and this is where you will find the best shopping and many good restaurants. Sail just seven miles to the east of there and you will discover captivating Elbow Cay where, in Hope Town, one of the world’s few remaining kerosene and wind-up mechanism lighthouses is still operating. Eleuthera is another ribbon-like island that weaves its way across sapphire seas to the south of Great Abaco. It is 110 miles long and no more than two miles wide. Eleuthera is in a more natural state than many of the other Bahamian islands. It is rich in historical landmarks and colonial-style villages, and is famous for its three-mile-long beach of subtle pink hues. Bareback horse riding on the beaches is a novel experience, as is the fun that comes with a night time beach bonfire with friends.

The Exumas

The biggest problem you will have to contend with when cruising aboard a luxury charter yacht in the Exumas is where to go. This region in the Bahamas is an archipelago of 365 magnetic islands and cays that are scattered across a cerulean sea. That represents one destination for each day of the year! The opportunities for unbridled exploration and adventure are seemingly endless: you can choose between the delights of mixing it with the locals in their old-world villages and dining on local delicacies, through to total isolation on a remote sand cay. Other alternatives include fishing, snorkelling, scuba diving and boating fun.

No matter what you do or where you go in the Exumas you will be enveloped in an aura of history. In bygone days, pirates based themselves in the cays and hidden coves and often buried on shore the loot they plundered from their unsuspecting targets who happened to sail past the Bahamas. Elizabeth Harbour was a favourite haunt for the notorious Captain Kidd. In more recent times, the spectacular scenery to be found in the Exumas led to Staniel Cay being one of the locations for the filming of the James Bond movie, Thunderball.
