But you will need to be quick. These Minke Whales mass together on the Great Barrier Reef every winter but only for a short time. It is a truly remarkable time though. Whether you are a snorkeller or scuba dive expert that moment when these gigantic gorgeous mammals gently approach you and drift unhurriedly past is breath-taking.
It was only discovered that Minke Whales aggregate in this area in the 1980s. Stunning really, considering they grow to over 8m in length (the size of a London double-decker bus) and 6 tonnes (almost the same as an elephant or Tyrannosaurus rex).
They are also known to be inquisitive and friendly which makes them so much fun to spend time around. They are interested in us and can spend hours interacting amongst themselves with us. Primarily they communicate by singing to each other with different shifts in pitch and pattern. Eavesdropping on this is a truly enchanting experience.
While we still have much to learn about the Dwarf Minke Whale while onboard BELUGA you will have the opportunity to listen to and discuss these amazing animals with Dr John Rumney, an expert whale guide and one of the first persons to discover Minke Whales swimming the Australian Ocean.
