The Grenadines are a heady mix of a wealthy tropical playground combined with stunning beauty and real get-away-from-it-all territory. It is an idyllic location for a luxury yacht charter, and here we share some of the places we recommend as the jewels in this Caribbean crown.
The magical Grenadine islands lie south of the lush and untouched St Vincent, with a history that dates back to the swashbuckling pirates of the 17th century. Onboard a luxury charter yacht you will have the opportunity to explore some of the 32 captivating islands and cays here. There are exclusive private hotels, deserted islets of soft white beaches and sky blue water, and towns where you experience the true taste of Caribbean island life. There is so much to see and do here while you are being pampered by your professional crew onboard your very own private crewed mega yacht. These are a few of our favourite places that we recommend including on your luxury superyacht itinerary.
MUSTIQUE
Mustique is known throughout the world as a hideaway for the rich and famous with gracious private villas and the famous Basil's Bar. Basil's is mostly just a wooden balcony with the waves lapping underneath. It has a sociable bar, serves good food and has an open-air dance floor. And you can never be quite sure as to which celebrity (think Mick Jagger) is going to rock up on any given night. There are some beautiful beaches on the island and excellent diving on coral reefs to be experienced. The island is so small you can take in the sights by foot or on horseback.
TOBAGO CAYS
The Tobago Cays are a spectacular cluster of uninhabited islets offering excellent diving on easily accessible tropical reefs. The inner reefs offer warm, shallow water with some of the best snorkelling in the world. The range of the marine life you will see here will astound as you swim among the colourful reefs and sponges, tropical fish and sea turtles.
This place truly is a highlight of the Grenadines, if not the whole Caribbean. An idyllic yachting anchorage, a dream for divers and snorkelers, a paradise for beachcombers, and a film location for Pirates of the Caribbean, the Tobago Cays Marine Park is one of the world's most awe-inspiring island destinations. As the sun sets, we recommend enjoying fresh lobster and champagne under the moon light!
CHATHAM BAY on UNION ISLAND
Chatham Bay on Union Island has some excellent snorkelling along the north side of the bay as well as some great walking ashore. Chatham Bay is also home to a few laidback and very friendly beach bars. The time to be there is sunset. This is THE place to see the ever-elusive "green flash" as the sun meets the sea... with your toes in the sand, Jimmy Buffett or Bob Marley in the background and a rum punch in your hand.
SALT WHISTLE BAY on MAYREAU ISLAND
Salt Whistle Bay is an idyllic palm fringed semi circle of white sand set against the azure blue of the sea and the lush green vegetation on the hills. This lovely tranquil bay is ideal for all sorts of watersports and there's also some good walking here. Take the short hike to the top of the hill where you will have breathtaking views across the Tobago Cays from the quaint Catholic Church.
CANOUAN ISLAND
One of the Caribbean's newest luxury destinations, Canouan, is just five square miles in size and was formerly a community of sailors and fishermen. Your luxury charter yacht can drop anchor off Tamarind Beach Hotel to allow you to enjoy all the beauty that Charlestown Bay offers. Charter guests have the opportunity to take in a round of golf at The Canouan Resort's Jim Fazio designed 18 hole championship golf course, whilst others might enjoy a hike around the island or spa experience at Canouan Resort's Spa. Alternatively, Canouan is a great location for water based activities as well!
BEQUIA
Beautiful Bequia, pronounced 'bekway', is considered by many to be the best destination in the Windward Islands, with Admiralty Bay one of the finest natural harbours in the Caribbean.
The capital, Port Elizabeth, is a charming town comprising many colourful wooden buildings housing shops and restaurants, all with a lovely island flair. Glorious golden sand beaches and beach bar hideaways are a feature. The island is famous for the small and colourful model boats made by the islanders, a tradition that harks back to the whaling days. The craftsmanship of these are outstanding. If you are in town then the Sargeant Brothers Model Boat Shop or the small Maritime Museum which depicts the whaling history are both worth a visit.
PETIT ST VINCENT
The southern most island in the Grenadines Petit St Vincent, known locally as PSV, is a lush 115-acre tropical island. With just one hotel home to 22 spacious one bedroom cottages and two bedroom beach villas, this is one of the Caribbean's most private of islands, yet still open to the public. The hillside restaurant offers lovely views over the turquoise sea and depending on where exactly your Captain anchors you may be able to look down on your charter yacht while enjoying a sunset cocktail at the bar.
