When you charter a yacht it’s tempting to go full speed filling your days racing from one port to another, ticking off the boxes so you can list the amazing places you have been to. But there is also something very special about spending a day going nowhere. There are so many things for you to enjoy just staying on anchor for a day or even two or three. Here’s some of the things we enjoy doing on our quiet days….
1. Get to know your boat's amenities
Your Crew will have no doubt introduced you to all the toys on board but if you have never tried a SUP or jetski now is the perfect time. They are all easier than you think and with knowledgeable crew to assist you, a yacht charter is a great time to learn some new skills. And if holidays for you are all about doing nothing ... an hour or two in the Jacuzzi being served your special cocktails might just be your sort of heaven. Or make use of your yacht's enviable multi-media system – the latest movies and music with quality resolution and sounds in luxurious surroundings.
2. A tender trip
You have a powerful tender with professional Crew at your disposal. They'll prepare some supplies ... drinks, possibly a picnic, snorkel gear, and sunscreen ... and take you exploring. Maybe you'll discover a reef with a myriad of colourful fish and coral to snorkel on or ashore remote Roman ruins with a crumbling amphitheatre to clamber over. Find that isolated beach for a once-in-a-lifetime picnic or venture up the river to a small village with a local restaurant serving up fresh and fabulous local delicacies. You don't even need to know what you are going to find ... the fun here is in the unexpected.
3. Beach life
In most anchorages the beach is 'just there' and it is very often a spectacular one, so we suggest you let your crew organise some time ashore for you. Whether it's for family beach games, or a flaming BBQ party with good sounds, or perhaps you'd prefer a romantic candle-lit dinner under the stars they can help you make your yacht charter even more memorable by making the most of your immediate environment.
4. Explore the local sights
Almost every anchorage has something interesting to explore ashore. Maybe a local market where you can see fresh fruit and vegetables and a mouth-watering array of recently landed seafood seldom seen in your local supermarket. Not a foodie ... then there is often some amazing historical site, or a park with remarkable flora or fauna, or even a place with breath-taking views to visit, not to mention a famous bar or restaurant to sample the local treats. It may be advantageous to rent a car or do a guided trip to get the best out of your time. Your professional Crew will have the local knowledge so check with them about the sightseeing opportunities in the area.
Whether you prefer spending quality time with the friends and family you have with you or you enjoy meeting new people one of the lovely things about chartering a yacht is that the chores of daily life disappear and you have lots of time. Time to, for example, relax over a leisurely breakfast with your loved ones and companions. Or for the more gregarious invite guests from a neighbouring yacht for sundown cocktails and canapes. Your fellow charterers will be a mix of nationalities and professions ... you may be surprised about who you are sharing the anchorage with. You might even receive a return invitation.
6. Get to know your crew
You have at your fingertips a wealth of information and experience. You'd be surprised at who your crew are. Many of them are well educated with degrees in everything from marine biology to environmental engineering. You may have crew who are artists or masseuses, musicians or florists and most are genuinely happy to share their skills and knowledge with you.
7. Get in the water
And of course the sea is all around you – just jump right in. There is nothing so refreshing and relaxing as being in the water. And you will of course be in some of the best waters in the world. On board your charter yacht there will also be any number water toys to make this even more enjoyable .... from inflatable islands with seating and bars to slides and even mini-aquatic parks.
Finally do make sure that you take the time to take in the beautiful scenery unfolding around you while you are at anchor. And don't forget the spectacular sunsets and the stargazing at night – these are some of the most magical moments of life on board and an idyllic way to end the day.
