Dramatic and narrow the Corinth Canal in Greece has been closed due to landslides for over a year however is due to reopen from July 5 until the end October 2022. It is an impressive structure and an exciting, important part of a luxury yacht charter travelling from Athens to the stunning Ionian Islands.
As a navigational aid built in the 1880s and early 1890s, the Corinth Canal is one of the most significant infrastructures in Greece. The Canal is still as useful today serving a variety of needs, for both crewed yacht charters and general shipping.
The Corinth Canal is still a very busy commercial shipping canal even though today it is too narrow to accommodate some of the modern larger vessels. The majority of luxury charter yachts fit within the Canal's constraints although some of the largest superyachts are denied this experience.
In terms of geography the Corinth Canal connects the Aegean and Adriatic Seas, while it at the same time separating the Peloponnese Peninsula from the Greek mainland. The waterway is carved deeply into the landscape so that it is entirely at sea level, eliminating the need for any locks. This was one of the greatest achievements of technology and engineering when it was completed. The canal is capable of only one-way traffic, and there is a fee for each crossing.
In addition to being a unique and memorable experience, cruising through the Corinth Canal on a crewed yacht charter in Greece is a convenient shortcut to reach the Ionian Islands from Athens. A yacht charter journey through the Canal reduces the cruising distance by at least 185 nautical miles, since it is no longer necessary to round the southern end of the Peloponnesian Peninsula before reaching the beautiful Ionian Islands.
Being 6343 kilometers (almost 4 miles) in length, 8 meters in depth, with vertical walls ascending 63 meters from the sea, cruising this canal is definitely an experience to add to your bucket list. The deck of your luxury charter yacht provides such an exceptional vantage point to view the Canal from.
The other benefit of a charter that includes transiting the Corinth Canal is the Corinth Gulf itself. This area has far less crowds than many other areas of Greece but is still blessed with historical sites, breathtaking natural scenery and an unspoilt coastline that is very typically Greek and considered one of the best in the country.
Indeed some say that this region of Greece has never attracted the number of visitors it truly deserves. This is a land that is lush green filled with olive groves and cypress trees creating a stunning backdrop against the cerulean seas of the Gulf. Itea, Galaxhidi and Trizonia are all refreshingly low-key villages. Cosy and quaint, the locals are friendly and welcoming. This a Greece where you will feel like you have stepped back in time.
