Food is a vital part of a luxury yacht charter and while you will have a superb chef onboard you should also try the traditional local cuisine from the country you are cruising in when you are ashore. Here is one such traditional dish to enjoy while you are on your Mediterranean yacht charter.
Spanish Paella
The food in Spain is influenced by many things including her history, with a strong connection to Moorish dishes, the stunning sunshine and the bountiful sea. Possibly one of the most iconic of Spanish dishes, this rice dish comes with varying combination of meat, seafood, spices and vegetables. While there are countless variations it is always cooked in a dimpled, flat bottom 2-handled frying pan and it invariably includes saffron, both for the taste and the colour. We suggest you order Paella Ciega or Blind Paella if you prefer your seafood already shelled and your meat with no bones.
Croatian Peka
Traditional Croatian food is varied, influenced by the tastes and traditions from nearby countries and historical conquerors. One of our most popular meals in Croatia is the Dalmatian peka, a blend of vegetables and meat or octopus drizzled with olive oil, sprinkled with herbs, and then cooked to perfection under a bell-like dome, or ispod čripnje. While you are travelling through the islands of Hvar, Vis & Korcula as well as the mainland you will see it listed on the menus in many of the restaurants. Traditionally it is baked in the embers of a fireplace, often in an outside kitchen area. Watching the end of the cooking process in one of the outside country-side restaurants sitting into amongst the trees is a real treat.
Italian Pasta
Italian food, with pasta at the centre, is a global cuisine that has been exported to all corners of the world and almost everyone has their favourites. You know you will be eating great food whether you are exploring the Amalfi or Ligurian Coasts, or the islands of Sardinia or Sicily. And of course each region has its own speciality. In Sicily try ziti, a chunky tubular pasta typically baked with a tomato based sauce and combined with ricotta and mozzarella while in Liguria sample the curzetti stampae, a coin shaped pasta served with either a meat sauce or a basil pesto.
French Bouillabaisse
The French Riviera offers a landscape of rolling hills with miles of topaz blue coastline... and incredible delicious food to enjoy in the sunshine. Bouillabaise, the signature Provençal fish soup, is served with copious quantities of croutons and rouille, a spicy, saffron and garlic flavoured dip. It usually consists of a few varieties of fish, shellfish and other seafood's including prawns, scampi, mussels or clams. The seafood is cooked in a rich broth with traditional Provençal flavours including saffron, fennel seeds, and orange zest.
The Greek Salad
Greek people are passionate about food and very proud of their culinary traditions. The Greek salad, or horiatiki, which means village in Greek, is one of the most popular and well-known Greek dishes both inside and outside Greece. Greeks love this salad and in the summer months it is present on most Greek tables in the tavernas and at home. It is a simple salad consisting of tomatoes, sliced cucumbers, capsicum/peppers, red onion, feta cheese, and olives (usually Kalamata olives), seasoned with salt and oregano, and dressed with olive oil. What makes it so special is the excellence of the ingredients – spicy olive oil, vine ripened tomatoes, juicy black olives, fragrant oregano and real Greek feta cheese.
