The Gulf of Naples lies in the Campania Region of southwestern Italy at Latitude 40 degrees north. It is fronted by the city of Naples, Mount Vesuvius and the Roman ruins of Pompeii and Herculaneum (both completely destroyed by an eruption of Vesuvius in 79 A.D.).
A few miles from the coast lay the breathtaking islands of Capri and Ischia. Capri is situated in the south of the gulf, opposite to the Sorrentine peninsula and the cliff-top town of Sorrento - the gateway to Positano and the stunning Amalfi Coast.
The Amalfi Coast is renowned throughout the world for the unique beauty of its landscapes. Twisting roads winding through rocky cliffs reveal tantalising glimpses of small villages, secluded bays, and inlets, all looking out over a clear blue sea. Lush green Mediterranean flora colours the slopes of the surrounding hills and cliffs. This journey leads you to towns of worldwide fame such as Positano, Amalfi, and Ravello.
Climate
The ‘official’ tourist season begins in May and ends in October. The weather is beautiful in May, June, and September, and you might prefer to come during this period if you want to avoid the crowds of people who arrive in the warmest months of July and August.
For nature lovers, the flora and fauna are at their most beautiful in late March and throughout April. October has a special charm. Given that the area is no longer flooded with visitors at this time, those who choose to travel off-season will have the opportunity to get to know the people, and the places, at their most authentic.
